What to Wear for Family Pictures in Savannah

Family

If you’ve ever started planning family pictures and immediately wondered, “What in the world are we all going to wear?” you’re definitely not alone. For many families, choosing outfits is the hardest part of the entire process.

The truth is, beautiful family portraits don’t happen by accident. While lighting, location, and connection all play an important role, thoughtful wardrobe choices have a huge impact on the finished portraits. The colors, textures, and styles you choose help create images that feel timeless, complement Savannah’s beautiful scenery, and look just as stunning framed on your walls years from now as they do today.

The good news is that you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

As a full-service Savannah family photographer, helping families plan their wardrobe is part of the experience. From offering personalized styling guidance to providing access to my carefully curated Client Closet, my goal is to take the guesswork out of the process so you can enjoy your session instead of stressing over what everyone is going to wear.

The family featured throughout this post is a wonderful example of how thoughtful styling can elevate your portraits. Their coordinated wardrobe, paired with the soft greens of the trees and greenery, Spanish moss, and classic beauty of one of Savannah’s historic parks, came together to create portraits that feel timeless, elegant, and unmistakably Southern.

Let’s dive into some of my favorite tips for planning outfits that photograph beautifully and help create family portraits you’ll love for years to come.

Start with Mom’s Outfit

One of the first things I tell families when we begin planning their session is to start with Mom’s outfit.

The reason is simple. When Mom feels comfortable, confident, and beautiful in what she’s wearing, the rest of the planning process becomes much easier. Instead of trying to coordinate everyone’s outfits all at once, we choose an outfit she loves and build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around it.

While every family’s planning process looks a little different, my goal is always the same: to create a wardrobe that feels cohesive without looking overly matched. The colors, textures, and styles should complement one another while allowing each person’s personality to shine.

For this family, the finished wardrobe came together beautifully. Mom’s Hill House Home dress featured soft blues, whites, greens, and pastel florals; Dad wore a classic blue polo-style shirt with khakis; and their sweet little guy wore a timeless Feltman Brothers Bobby Suit from my Client Closet with white knee socks and saddle oxfords from The Horseshoe Crab, a favorite boutique of mine in Savannah. Together, their outfits felt polished, classic, and perfectly suited for an evening beneath Savannah’s live oaks.

If you’re not sure where to begin, don’t worry. Outfit planning is part of the full-service experience I provide for every family. I’m here to help you coordinate colors, textures, and styles that photograph beautifully and complement both your family and the beautiful Savannah location we’ve chosen for your session.

Let Savannah Inspire Your Color Palette

One of my favorite things about photographing families outdoors is that Savannah provides some of the most beautiful natural backdrops anywhere.

Our historic parks, centuries-old live oaks, Spanish moss, fountains, winding pathways, and seasonal blooms create an elegant setting that never goes out of style. Whether your session takes place beneath towering oak trees or beside one of Savannah’s beautiful fountains, choosing clothing that works with the environment helps create portraits that feel natural and timeless.

Soft blues, creams, ivory, sage green, dusty blue, muted florals, soft blush, light tan, and warm neutrals all photograph beautifully in Savannah’s parks.

For this family, every color echoed something already present in the landscape. The greens complemented the surrounding trees and Spanish moss. The soft blues reflected the peaceful feeling of the park, while the whites kept everything feeling fresh and classic.

When your wardrobe works with your surroundings instead of competing against them, the focus stays exactly where it should: on your family.

Choose Timeless Instead of Trendy

Styles come and go, but your family portraits should still feel beautiful decades from now.

When you’re investing in portraits that will hang in your home, choosing classic clothing is almost always the best decision.

I generally recommend avoiding:

  • Neon or fluorescent colors
  • Large logos or brand names
  • Graphic t-shirts
  • Clothing with large blocks of text
  • Small repeating patterns that can appear distracting on camera
  • Extremely trendy pieces that may quickly feel dated

Simple doesn’t have to mean boring. Beautiful fabrics, subtle textures, delicate floral prints, linen, eyelet, heirloom children’s clothing, and classic silhouettes photograph wonderfully while allowing your family’s personalities to shine.

The goal is for someone to look at your portraits twenty years from now and see your family, not the fashion trends of the moment.

Don’t Forget the Shoes

This may sound like a small detail, but shoes can completely change the finished look of your portraits.

After spending time carefully selecting clothing, it’s easy to overlook what everyone is wearing on their feet. Bright athletic shoes or worn sneakers can quickly distract from an otherwise beautifully coordinated wardrobe.

Instead, think about the entire outfit from head to toe.

Classic leather loafers, saddle oxfords, neutral sandals, simple flats, dress shoes, or barefoot portraits in certain locations all create a more polished look.

For young boys, white knee socks paired with classic shoes add a timeless Southern touch that photographs beautifully. It’s one of those little details that often makes a much bigger impact than people expect.

Accessories Should Complement, Not Compete

Accessories are another opportunity to pull everything together.

A simple bow for a little girl, classic pearl earrings, a delicate necklace, suspenders, or a beautiful woven belt can add personality without overwhelming the portrait.

The key is balance.

If one family member is wearing a patterned dress, keep everyone else’s accessories relatively simple. If everyone is dressed in solid colors, adding a little texture through sweaters, woven fabrics, or subtle accessories creates visual interest while keeping the overall look cohesive.

Why Styling is Included in My Full-Service Portrait Experience

Many families are surprised to learn just how much planning goes into creating beautiful portraits before session day ever arrives.

As a family photographer in Savannah, GA, I believe wardrobe planning shouldn’t be something you have to tackle on your own.

We’ll talk through your location, the season, your home’s décor, where you plan to display your portraits, and the overall feeling you want your images to have. From there, I’ll help coordinate outfits that fit your family’s style while creating a finished gallery that looks beautiful from beginning to end.

My Client Closet is available for full-session clients, making it even easier to create timeless portraits without purchasing an entirely new wardrobe. Whether you’re dressing a toddler in classic heirloom clothing or looking for a beautiful dress that photographs well, having thoughtfully selected pieces available takes much of the stress out of the planning process.

Planning for the Finished Artwork

Something that often surprises new clients is that we aren’t simply planning for a social media post.

We’re planning for the artwork that will eventually live in your home.

When your portraits are displayed together as framed wall art or beautifully designed albums, coordinated clothing becomes even more important. A cohesive wardrobe creates a gallery of images that feels intentional and elegant, making it easy to display your portraits for years to come.

As your children grow, these portraits become part of your family’s story. Years from now, I want you to walk past them every day and remember this season of life exactly as it was.

That’s why I believe thoughtful planning is always worth it.

Choosing the Right Location

Savannah offers so many beautiful locations for family portraits, and each one has its own personality.

Historic parks with live oaks and Spanish moss create a classic Southern backdrop that’s beautiful year-round. Formal gardens, fountains, and tree-lined paths offer variety while keeping the overall feel elegant and timeless.

When families tell me they love traditional portraits but still want the warmth and beauty of being outdoors, Savannah’s parks are often my first recommendation.

This session was a perfect example of why. Every turn offered another beautiful backdrop, and the carefully coordinated wardrobe complemented every scene without ever competing with it.

I’ll guide you through wardrobe planning, help you choose a location that fits your family’s style, gently pose you throughout the session, and help you turn your favorite images into heirloom artwork you’ll enjoy every day.
