From Savannah to the Cotwolds, Part 3: Bath

Travel

After starting our day in the storybook dream of Bibury and marveling at the charm of Castle Combe, our Cotswolds adventure took us to a city with lots of history and sophistication: Bath. Famous for its Roman bathhouses and as the former home of literary icon Jane Austen, Bath brought an entirely different vibe to our journey—and it was the perfect way to wrap up an unforgettable first day.

As soon as we arrived, I could feel the shift from countryside quaintness to bustling city energy. Bath is alive with shops, restaurants, and beautiful architecture at every turn. One of the most striking landmarks we visited was the Pulteney Bridge. Spanning the River Avon, it’s one of the few bridges in the world lined with shops on both sides. Seeing the bridge in person was a delight, but what truly took my breath away was the view of the Weir below.

The Weir’s cascading design is not only picturesque but also historic. Its original concept dates back to the Middle Ages as a flood defense system for the city—talk about medieval ingenuity! It was updated in the 1970s to improve its functionality, but standing there, watching the water flow, you’d never guess that something so practical could look so elegant.

As evening approached, it was time for dinner, and we landed at The Botanist. Let me tell you, this place is an experience! Their hanging kebabs were the talk of the table, with skewers of grilled meats and vegetables dripping with sauces. While many in our party savored those, I opted for a chicken Caesar salad, which was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I needed after a long day of exploring.

Now, I’ll admit I didn’t have a chance to visit the famous Roman bathhouses during our time in Bath. (Cue the collective gasp!) But someone else in our group did and came back raving about how incredible they were. Apparently, walking through the ancient ruins and seeing how the Romans once relaxed and socialized is nothing short of awe-inspiring. I’ll just have to add it to my list for next time!

Bath was a striking contrast to the more rural, postcard-perfect towns we visited earlier in the day. Its lively atmosphere, rich history, and elegant streets offered a refreshing change of pace. By the end of the day, I was thoroughly exhausted—how could I not be after seeing so much in one day? But it was the kind of tired that comes from living a dream.

Stay tuned for my next post, where I’ll share all about the charming town of Stow-on-the-Wold, where we stayed during our trip. Spoiler alert: it’s as quaint as it sounds!
