From Savannah to the Cotswolds, Part 6: Burford

After spending the morning exploring Bourton-on-the-Water, we headed over to the charming town of Burford. Known as the “Gateway to the Cotswolds,” it’s full of honey-colored stone buildings, cozy shops, and that quintessential English countryside charm.

Our first order of business was a walk up the hill to take in the views. Let me tell you—this coastal Georgia girl is not used to hills. It’s flat where I live, and I like it that way. The incline definitely gave me a run for my money, but the reward at the top was absolutely worth it. From there, we could see the entire town spread out below us, with its winding high street and rooftops tucked into the rolling countryside.

As we wandered back down, one window display in particular stopped me in my tracks. Tucked behind the glass was a Neighborhood Watch sign… surrounded by a bunch of tiny dolls and figurines, all perched in little doll-sized chairs as if they were keeping watch themselves. I couldn’t help but laugh—and silently applaud the homeowner’s sense of humor. With thousands of visitors passing through the Cotswolds each year, I’m sure their home gets plenty of curious glances and camera clicks.

After that chuckle-worthy find, we stopped for lunch at Huffkins, a delightful bakery and café that’s been around since 1890. It was the perfect spot to rest our feet, enjoy a bite, and soak in the charm of the town.

Next, we wandered around town and evenutally made our way over to St. John the Baptist Church, a stunning medieval church dating back to the 12th century. The architecture, the history, and the quiet reverence inside made it one of my favorite stops of the entire trip. It’s amazing to think of how many centuries of life that church has witnessed.

After leaving Burford, we drove to Daylesford Farm for a drink and a little browsing. This upscale farm shop and café is a feast for the eyes—fresh flowers, artisan foods, and the kind of relaxed elegance that makes you want to stay all afternoon.

Eventually, we made our way back to Stow for dinner at The Sheep on Sheep Street, where I had one of the best steaks of the trip—perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. With full bellies and tired feet, we headed to bed to rest up for our final full day in the Cotswolds, which would begin in Chipping Campden.
