In-Home vs. In-Studio Newborn Sessions: Which Is Right for Your Family?

Newborn

First of all, congratulations! Whether you’re still adjusting to the news or already rocking those maternity pants like a pro, this is such an exciting time. As a Savannah maternity photographer and mama of two boys, I know how quickly these moments fly by. That’s why choosing the perfect way to capture your little one’s first days is so important—and, let’s be honest, a bit overwhelming.

So, let’s talk about in-home and in-studio newborn sessions. Both options are beautiful, and you truly can’t go wrong. But each has its pros, cons, and a sprinkle of prep work. Here’s the rundown to help you make the best decision for your family (and maybe even sneak in a nap while you’re at it).

Table of Contents

In-Home Newborn Sessions: The Comfort of Home

The Pros:

  • No need to leave the house. This one’s huge. You’re in the newborn bubble of diapers, feedings, and figuring out why babies only sleep when you’re not. Being at home means no packing diaper bags or forgetting pacifiers.
  • Personal touches. Your home becomes part of the story—your favorite armchair, the nursery you carefully designed, or even your family pet sneaking into a few shots.
  • Relaxed vibe. No need to stress about being on time. If baby needs a feeding or a quick change, you’re already in your comfort zone.

The Cons:

  • Lighting can be tricky. While I bring my professional expertise and equipment, natural light isn’t always predictable in every home.
  • Clutter alert. Don’t stress, but a little tidying in the main areas we’ll photograph goes a long way (or just shove it all in the laundry room—we’ve all been there).
  • Limited setup options. Although I usually bring a travel-size bean bag to use during shots of baby by him or herself, if you’ve envisioned those perfectly posed studio shots, an in-home session may not provide quite the same look due to space constrictions.

How to Prepare:

  • Open the blinds or curtains to let in as much natural light as possible.
  • Tidy the spaces you’d like photographed, like the nursery, master bedroom, or living room.
  • Keep baby comfortable—diaper, swaddle, and a full tummy are the magic ingredients.

In-Studio Newborn Sessions: Classic and Curated

The Pros:

  • Minimalist elegance. My studio setup focuses on simple, classic poses with a white backdrop and soft, neutral wraps and accessories. This timeless style ensures your images will always look stunning.
  • Professional lighting and setup. The studio is equipped with professional lighting and everything we need to capture your baby beautifully. When you arrive, the setup is ready to go—no downtime for hauling in equipment or setting things up, as might be necessary for an in-home session.
  • A distraction-free space. Without the background noise of home life, the studio allows us to focus entirely on your baby, creating a calm and peaceful environment for both parents and little ones.

The Cons:

  • You have to leave the house. I know, I know. This can feel like planning an international trip when you’re sleep-deprived, but I promise—it’s worth it.
  • Less personal. While you’re welcome to bring heirloom items that are special to you or your baby, it won’t have the sentimental elements of your home.

How to Prepare:

  • Pack the diaper bag with essentials like diapers, wipes, and a pacifier. If you have a toddler or older child, make sure you bring along things for them, too.
  • Dress in layers—the studio will be warm to keep baby cozy.
  • Leave plenty of time to get out the door; newborns have a sixth sense for spitting up right before you leave.

Making the Decision

Here’s the big question: What do you want these photos to feel like when you look back on them? If you want a laid-back vibe that captures the cozy essence of your first days at home, an in-home session is perfect. If you’re dreaming of a curated, classic look with posed images and perfect lighting, a studio session will deliver.

You don’t have to make this decision alone! With years of experience as a Savannah maternity photographer and newborn expert, I’m here to help you weigh your options and plan a session that’s just right for your family.

Why Reserve Early?

Newborn sessions are best done within the first two weeks of baby’s arrival—before those tiny fingers and toes grow too fast. To ensure availability, I recommend contacting me at the beginning of your second trimester.

For parents who want to capture every big milestone during the first year, my Milestone Moments Baby Plan is a fantastic option. This membership includes sessions for your baby’s biggest milestones: newborn, sitting, and first birthday. Plus, you can also add a Savannah maternity photography session to your baby plan! With the baby plan membership you’ll never have to worry about missing a moment (because let’s be honest, sleep deprivation is a real thing).
