First Birthday Photos in Savannah: Why a Simplicity Session Could be the Perfect Fit

Milestone

A first birthday feels like such a big milestone, not only because your baby is turning one, but because of everything that happened during the year it took to get there.

In twelve short months, that tiny baby you brought home has grown into a little person with their own expressions, preferences, and personality. They may be crawling everywhere, pulling up on furniture, taking their first steps, or smiling at anyone who looks their way. They may also need a little time to warm up and save their biggest smiles for the people they know best.

As a Savannah baby photographer and a mom, I love documenting this age because no two one-year-olds are exactly alike. First birthday photos preserve who your baby is right now, just before babyhood begins giving way to toddlerhood.

Why Your Baby’s First Birthday Deserves to Be Documented

There is so much to celebrate when your baby turns one. Of course, there is the birthday itself, but there is also the entire first year that brought you to this point.

It is a year filled with first smiles, first foods, first teeth, and so many little changes that seem to happen overnight. Somewhere along the way, the tiny newborn who once curled against your chest started sitting, crawling, waving, clapping, standing, or even taking those first wobbly steps.

You see your baby every day, so it can be hard to notice just how much they are changing until you look back at a photograph from a few months earlier. By their first birthday, even their expressions feel different. Their personality is becoming clearer, and they have found all kinds of ways to make you laugh.

First birthday portraits give you a way to remember those details. Not simply what your baby looked like when they turned one, but who they were at this stage.

A Simple Approach to First Birthday Photos

First birthday photos can be as simple or as styled as you would like, but they don’t need an elaborate setup to feel meaningful.

At this age, your baby brings so much personality to the session all on their own. Their little hands, new teeth, changing expressions, and the way they move and interact are what make the photographs special. A simple setting keeps the focus on all the details that make your baby who they are right now.

My first birthday Simplicity Sessions take place in my Savannah photography studio and are designed to create classic portraits that will still feel beautiful and meaningful years from now. Rather than building the entire session around a theme, we build it around your child and the personality that has grown so much during their first year.

Both of my Session Experiences, Simplicity and Signature, can be used to document your baby’s first birthday. The best option depends on what you would like the session to include and your baby’s personality.

If you only want your baby photographed and are not planning a cake smash, multiple outfits, or a full family session, a Simplicity Session could be a beautiful fit. These 20-minute sessions work especially well for babies who are generally comfortable around new people and tend to warm up quickly. They give us time to focus on your baby’s expressions, personality, and all the little details you want to remember from this age.

If your baby is more cautious around unfamiliar people or usually needs extra time to feel comfortable in a new environment, a Signature Session may be the better choice. The additional time allows your baby to settle in without feeling rushed. A Signature Session also gives us more flexibility for multiple looks, a cake smash, or portraits with the whole family.

Neither option is more meaningful than the other. It simply comes down to your vision for the session and which experience will be the best fit for your baby.

What Is Included in a First Birthday Simplicity Session?

Simplicity Sessions are a shorter option for first birthday and baby milestone photography at my Savannah studio. Although the portrait session itself lasts approximately 20 minutes, the experience includes more than the time we spend taking pictures.

A first birthday Simplicity Session includes:

  • A 20-minute portrait session
  • Access to the studio client closet
  • Help selecting clothing that will photograph beautifully
  • A simple, classic setting that keeps the attention on your baby
  • A design and ordering appointment to view your session images and purchase your artwork

The client closet includes clothing for babies and young children through size 4T, so you may not need to purchase something new for the session. I can help you select an outfit that fits properly, photographs well, and coordinates with the timeless look of the studio.

After your session, we’ll meet for a design and ordering appointment. You’ll see the finished images and choose the ones you love most without having to sort through a large online gallery on your own. I will also be there to help you decide how you would like to enjoy them, whether that is through digital images, an album, framed artwork, or a collection that coordinates with portraits from your baby’s newborn session.

When Should You Schedule First Birthday Photos in Savannah?

The best time to schedule first birthday photos depends on whether you would like to use the images at your baby’s birthday party.

If you want to display the portraits at the party or use them as part of the celebration, plan to have the session at least one month before the party date. This gives us time for the session, your design and ordering appointment, and the preparation of anything you would like to have ready for the celebration.

If you do not need the photographs before the party, you have much more flexibility. Anytime between 11 and 13 months can work well for a first birthday session.

The session does not have to take place on your baby’s exact birthday or even during the same week. Scheduling it a little earlier or later does not make it any less of a first birthday portrait session. Choosing a date when your family’s schedule is calmer may also make the experience more enjoyable than trying to fit pictures into an already busy birthday week.

Because Simplicity Sessions are available on select weekdays, I recommend getting in touch before your baby turns 11 months. Planning ahead gives us a better selection of dates, especially if you need the portraits completed by a particular time.

What If Your Baby Has Not Reached a Certain Milestone Yet?

Every baby develops on their own timeline. Your child does not need to be walking, standing independently, or doing anything specific before we photograph them.

If they are sitting, we can document that. If they prefer to crawl, we will work with it. If they are pulling up, holding onto your hands, or taking a few wobbly steps, those can become part of the session too.

First birthday portraits are not about checking off a list of developmental milestones. They are about remembering your baby exactly as they are at this point in their life.

As a mom, I know how strange it feels when your baby’s first birthday arrives. The days can feel long while you are living them, especially during the sleepless nights, teething, and constant changes. Then you look up and realize an entire year has passed.

You remember bringing home a tiny baby who depended on you for everything, and suddenly they are moving around the house, laughing at things you did not know they found funny, and showing you more of who they are every day.

A first birthday session gives you more than a photograph marking an age. It preserves the round cheeks, baby curls, tiny fingers, new teeth, and little expressions you see every day right now but may have trouble picturing clearly years from now.

The setup doesn’t have to be elaborate for the photographs to matter. Your baby, exactly as they are at one year old, is more than enough.

First birthday Simplicity Sessions are available on select weekdays at my Savannah portrait studio. I photograph babies and families from Savannah, Isle of Hope, Skidaway Island, Wilmington Island, Pooler, Richmond Hill, Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, Guyton, Springfield, Rincon, Statesboro, and the surrounding areas.

If your baby’s first birthday is approaching, I would love to help you plan a meaningful session that documents this stage and gives you something beautiful to enjoy long after the birthday decorations have been put away.
