Welcome back to my Cotswolds adventure! If you missed the first installment about Bibury—where the fog hung low and every corner looked like it came straight out of a fairy tale—make sure to check it out. Our first day was nothing short of magical, and we were just getting started!
After soaking in the breathtaking sights of Bibury, we set off for our second stop: Castle Combe, also known as “the prettiest village in England.” Now, listen, I’ve never been to The Cotswolds, much less Castle Combe, so the name had me thinking we were headed to an actual castle. You can imagine my surprise when we rolled into what turned out to be a quaint little town instead! I mean, where’s the grand moat and drawbridge? I may have been a tad disappointed not to be crossing a castle threshold, but Castle Combe more than made up for it with its undeniable charm.
Later, curiosity got the best of me, and I looked up the history behind Castle Combe’s name. As it turns out, “castle” refers to a castle that once stood nearby, while “combe” means “valley” in Old English. So, rather than being a castle itself, it’s a “castle valley.” Mystery solved! But with buildings dating back to the 17th century or earlier—and not a single new home built since 1600—Castle Combe felt like a true time capsule. Every street and structure feels like a window into a beautifully preserved past.
And if this little town looks familiar, there’s a good reason for that! Castle Combe’s timeless beauty has made it the perfect backdrop for several movies and TV shows. Among them? Downton Abbey—one of my personal favorites! It was such a thrill to walk those streets, knowing I was seeing the same setting where some of the village scenes took place.
Castle Combe is absolutely worth a visit if you’re exploring the Cotswolds. Whether you’re drawn to its picturesque streets, stunning buildings, or the sense of stepping back in time, this little town lives up to its title as “the prettiest village in England.” So, if you’re planning a trip to the Cotswolds, make sure to add Castle Combe to your itinerary—you won’t regret it!
Stay tuned for more posts from my adventure in England, where I’ll share more cute towns and beautiful sights! For now, enjoy viewing some more pictures of Castle Combe. If you see one you’d like to have, go HERE to order a fine art print of your favorite picture straight through my gallery.
