Wondering what to wear for newborn photos? Here’s how my studio wardrobe and personalized planning help you get your family ready.
When you’re planning newborn photos, it’s easy to wonder what everyone should wear. If you’re still pregnant, figuring out what you’ll feel comfortable wearing after the baby arrives is especially hard.
I remember feeling so different after each of my boys was born. After my C-section with my youngest, I was really swollen. I bought at least four different dresses while planning our newborn portraits because I wasn’t sure what dress size I’d need, much less whether I’d feel comfortable in it a couple of weeks later. My photographer had a client closet, but I had something specific in mind. Finding the right size and dress took a few attempts!
When I was deciding what I wanted my own client experience to look like, I thought about the things that can make getting ready for a session feel overwhelming. There’s getting yourself ready, planning outfits for everyone, and then deciding what to do with the photographs afterward. I wanted to help with those decisions so moms wouldn’t have to figure everything out on their own.
Today, let’s start with the clothing. Here’s how I help you plan what to wear for newborn family photos at my Savannah photography studio.

Start with something you’ll feel comfortable wearing while sitting, standing, and holding your baby. A dress with a relaxed fit and room to move can photograph beautifully without leaving you adjusting your clothes throughout the session.
Soft fabrics, a flowing skirt, and a waistline that doesn’t feel restrictive can be especially comfortable during those postpartum weeks. Think about the neckline, too. You’ll spend plenty of time looking down at your baby and holding them close, so you want something that stays comfortably in place.
You don’t have to know exactly what size you’ll be after giving birth. Your body may feel different from one week to the next, and a size on a tag doesn’t tell us whether you’ll feel good wearing something.
My client closet includes dresses in a range of sizes and styles, with many options that work well for postpartum bodies. You’re welcome to choose from those dresses or wear something of your own. Either way, I’ll help you find an option that feels comfortable and beautiful.

Soft, neutral colors work beautifully with the fine art backdrops and window light in my Savannah photography studio. Cream, ivory, soft blue, beige, and other gentle tones keep the attention on your faces and your connection with your baby.
Not everyone needs to wear the same color. A little variation in shades and textures helps your clothing feel coordinated without putting the whole family in identical outfits. A subtle pattern can work, too, especially when the other family members are wearing simpler pieces.
I usually recommend choosing mom’s outfit first and building the rest of the family’s clothing around it. Once you’ve found something you feel good in, it’s much easier to decide what everyone else should wear.
Large logos, bold graphics, and very busy patterns can draw your eye away from the people in the photograph. If you’re unsure about a color or pattern, show it to me. You don’t have to make those decisions alone.

You don’t need to shop for your baby’s session outfit. I have white wraps, bow swaddles, daygowns, and newborn outfits at the studio, including preemie sizes for the tiniest babies. Many of the outfits are from Feltman Brothers, whose beautifully classic clothing fits so well with the style of my newborn portraits.
Whether you love the look of a simple white wrap or a traditional daygown, we’ll choose pieces that complement your baby and coordinate with your family’s clothing. I’ll have everything ready at the studio, so there’s no need to add another outfit to your shopping list.

Once we’ve chosen clothing for mom and baby, we can coordinate the rest of the family. You may already have exactly what you need at home.
For partners, a simple button-down shirt and neutral pants often work well. We’ll look at the color, pattern, and fit alongside mom’s dress so everything feels like it belongs together. There’s no need to buy matching outfits.
For young children, comfort matters just as much as appearance. I want them to be able to sit with you, move around, and cuddle close without being distracted by something itchy or uncomfortable.
My client closet includes clothing for children through size 4T. If your older child wears a larger size, I’ll help you plan an outfit that coordinates with everyone else. You can send me pictures of what you’re considering or bring pieces to a Signature wardrobe consultation so we can see them together.

Helping you choose clothing is part of your newborn photography experience with me. You don’t need everyone’s outfits figured out before you book, and you don’t have to order several dresses just to have options.
Signature session clients can come to my Savannah studio for a wardrobe consultation before their session. You’ll have time to try on dresses, see how they feel, and let me help you narrow down your choices.
Sometimes a dress looks completely different on you than it does on the hanger. Trying a few options gives us a chance to find something you feel good wearing and see how it works with clothing for the rest of your family.
We can choose pieces for your baby and young children from the studio wardrobe, then plan what your partner and any older children will wear. If you have clothing at home that you’re considering, bring it along. Seeing everything together makes those decisions much easier.
Before your session, I’ll make sure your selections from the studio wardrobe are steamed and ready. You won’t need to take them home, keep them wrinkle-free, or remember to pack them while you’re getting everyone out the door. They’ll be waiting when you arrive.
Simplicity session clients also have access to my client closet for moms, babies, and young children.
We’ll talk ahead of time about sizing, preferences, and who’ll be photographed. I’ll pull outfit options and have them steamed and ready for the day of your session, so you can choose from those pieces when you arrive.
For a Signature session, we can spend time trying on and coordinating clothing at a separate wardrobe consultation. For a Simplicity session, I’ll prepare options based on our conversation and have them waiting for you on session day.

The outfit is only part of getting ready for newborn pictures. You may still be healing, learning your baby’s routines, and trying to work out when anyone in the house is going to sleep. Finding time to do your hair and makeup can feel like another project.
Hair and makeup for one person are included with my Signature sessions. You can come to the studio and have that part taken care of instead of trying to get ready between feeding the baby and getting everyone out the door.
Thoughtful makeup can soften the appearance of those deep under-eye circles, and having your hair done can make a difference in how you feel in front of the camera. I want you to look like yourself and feel good about being photographed.
I can’t promise you a full night’s sleep before your session, but I can make sure you don’t have to do your mascara with a baby in your arms.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. We’ll talk about the photographs you’re hoping for, plan clothing for your family, and have your studio wardrobe selections ready when you arrive.
As a mom, I know how much effort it can take to get everyone out of the house for pictures. As your newborn photographer, I want to take some of those decisions off your plate and help you feel comfortable being in the photographs with your baby.
If you’re looking for a Savannah newborn photographer, I’d love to hear about your family. Get in touch so we can talk about your due date, what you’re hoping to capture, and which session would be the best fit.
