As a Savannah newborn photographer, one of my most frequently asked questions is When Should I Schedule My Newborn Session?!
It’s such a great question because newborns are only little for so long. They change so much in their first few weeks, you’ll want to make sure you capture every itty bitty feature, to have so you can remember just how tiny they were. The first few weeks and months with a new baby fly by in a blur, so deciding to have that precious newborn stage captured is something that I wholeheartedly encourage!
The best time to book a newborn photographer is in your second trimester. Yep! Book that session before the baby has even arrived. So often, pregnant mamas think they need to wait to book their newborn session until the baby has arrived so that a specific date and time can be set. After all, babies come in their own time, so how can we schedule a session if we don’t know when they will arrive? Easy! We book your due date! I know it sounds kind of crazy, but many newborn photographers book several months in advance and only take a certain number of babies per month, so waiting until your little one has arrived could mean that the photographer you want to photograph your newborn (hopefully me) 😉may not have any availability! When we reserve your newborn session with your due date, I make sure to block off time a few weeks before and a few weeks after your due date. I only take 3-4 newborn sessions per month so that I can make sure I give each client the attention and service they deserve.
So…once baby has arrived, then what? Well, you’ll let me know when that sweet little bundle of joy has made their grand entrance, and I will get you scheduled for baby’s second week of life. Their first week is an adjustment period for both baby and you–along with doctor’s appointments and endless rounds of visitors, so we will schedule your newborn session for a weekday morning during baby’s second week. As we all know, babies come on their on time. Some come early, some may need a little extra hospital time, and still others may need to be in the NICU for a while. What does that mean for your session? The important thing is that you don’t stress. My favorite thing to tell newborn parents is that the baby is the boss. We go by what they need. So, if they don’t follow our schedule–it’s okay. I’ll work with you to figure it out, and we will still make sure to get beautiful pictures of baby and your family for you to have and cherish forever.
I hope you’ve enjoyed the information I’ve shared today on when to schedule your newborn photographer. Remember to book your photographer early–ideally toward the beginning of your second trimester, so you can reserve a spot on their calendar.
